Day One | Stepping into the Unknown: Reflecting on Faith through Matthew 14:22-33

In the verses of Matthew 14:22-33, we witness one of the most iconic instances in the New Testament – Jesus walking on water. This miraculous event not only showcased Jesus' divine nature but also holds profound significance for our own lives today. As we delve into this passage, let's explore the theme of faith and consider the steps that Jesus might be calling us to take in our own journey of faith.

A Glimpse into Matthew 14:22-33

The story begins with Jesus sending His disciples ahead of Him in a boat while He goes up on a mountainside to pray. Later that night, the disciples find themselves in the midst of a storm-tossed sea. Amidst the raging waters, Jesus approaches them, walking on the water. Understandably, the disciples are terrified, mistaking Jesus for a ghost. However, Jesus reassures them, saying, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

The Call to Faith

Peter, impulsive as always, seeks further confirmation from Jesus, asking to come to Him on the water. His request is met with a simple yet profound command from Jesus: "Come." Peter steps out of the boat and begins walking on the water towards Jesus. For a moment, Peter experiences the miraculous power of faith – he is literally defying the laws of nature by walking on water. However, as soon as he shifts his gaze from Jesus to the storm around him, fear creeps in, and he begins to sink. In desperation, Peter cries out to Jesus, who immediately reaches out His hand to save him, gently chiding him for his doubt.

Reflecting on Our Own Journey

Just like Peter, we are often called to step out in faith, leaving the safety of our 'boat' – our comfort zone – and trusting in Jesus, even when the storms of life rage around us. The story of Peter walking on water reminds us of the power of faith and the importance of keeping our focus on Jesus amidst life's chaos. It prompts us to reflect on the steps of faith that Jesus might be calling us to take in our own lives.

Embracing the Unknown

Stepping into the unknown requires courage and unwavering faith. It demands that we trust in the unseen and believe in the extraordinary. Jesus' invitation to Peter to walk on water was not about defying physics but about testing the limits of Peter's faith. In the same way, Jesus calls us to venture beyond our comfort zones, to take risks in obedience to His voice, and to trust in His unfailing presence through life's uncertainties.

Conclusion

As we contemplate the powerful imagery of Jesus walking on water and Peter's bold yet faltering steps of faith, let us take a moment to reflect on our own journey with Christ. What 'boats' is Jesus inviting us to step out of? What storms of doubt or fear threaten to overpower our faith? Let us fix our gaze on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith, and allow His unwavering presence to give us the courage to step out in faith, even when the waters are rough. May we find the strength to embrace the unknown, trusting in Him who calls us to walk with Him on the waters of faith
